A First-Grader’s Bedtime
Posted by: LizzieWhen I visited Aiden’s class on Monday for “All About Me Day” one of his classmates asked him if he liked to watch “rasslin” on TV. Aiden stared at him blankly and I had to say, “No, Aiden doesn’t watch wrestling.” The kid then proceeded to tell us that it comes on at 9:00 or 9:30. Aiden’s teacher gasped and asked what he was doing up so late. I was shocked, too. All of our kids go to bed between 8:00 and 8:30. The only day of the week that they get to stay up late is Wednesday night because we’re at church and my choir rehearsal runs until after 9:00.
So my question is this: What time does your first grader go to bed?
Aiden’s teacher was very firm when she told that kid, “Eight o’clock is a first grader’s bedtime.” And I agree. Weigh in on the poll below and leave me a comment if you have anything to add.

Niakali is in 2nd grade and I have him to bed at 7:30 every night

Our kids go to bed between 9 and 9:30pm no matter what age they are.
They each go to bed with a book at 9 and are usually asleep by 9:30pm at lights out.
If they went to bed any earlier they’d be up at 6 o’clock in the morning.

Our neighbor has a little boy who appears to be between 5-8 years old (hard to tell), and he is frequently outside screaming at the top of his lungs when we got to bed at 10 or even waking us up at 11 PM on school nights. I never understand what is going on, since we don’t have children of our own, but that does NOT seem normal to me.

even my 4th grader goes to bed no later than 9. On weekends we’re more laxed but they are dead tired by 9:30 or 10 (which is very rare that they get to stay up that late). The only time we ever let our kids stay up that late other than special occasions was when we only had 1 and she was a baby and daddy worked later. But she didn’t go to school so it wasn’t a big deal.

Tara, we’re lax on the weekends, too. Unless they’re driving us nuts, then it’s to bed with them!
Cat, lights out at 9:30 is a good rule. I think if my kids had their own rooms, I’d let them do that, too.
Jenny, that’s nuts! I wouldn’t know what to do in that situation.
Nikki, 7:30 is a great bedtime. I wish I could have them all in bed that early some nights.

We usually start thinking about bedtime around 730-8, and in bed at by 9. If they had to get to school early, we’d be more strict about going back to 8pm bedtime.

During the week when there’s school, somewhere between 8-8:30. I don’t like zombie children in the a.m.

My dd is now in 3rd but then she went at 9pm

My kids are in bed by 8:30 on school nights. Even putting them to bed that early, there are still days I have to wake my daughter up. So, I’m thinking of pushing it back to 8:00.

My son is in kindergarten and goes to bed around 7 (and sleeps until 8). He has always been the type to need extra sleep, and if he goes to bed later than 8, he’s miserable the next day.
I can’t imagine letting a kid stay up to 10 or 11 (which I’m guessing would be when wrestling would be over.) That kid has to be exhausted!

My son is in 2nd grade at goes to bed at 8:30. I get him up every day at 7:30. They should get 11-12 hours of sleep in my opinion.
