Getting to know Aiden
Posted by: LizzieThree years old is a fun age. It’s a little difficult because Aiden has a very independent streak and is determined to to whatever it takes to get what he wants. This can be cute or annoying, depending on the situation.
For example, when he is thirsty, he must be the one who opens the refridgerator. If anyone else tries to do it for him, a blood-curdling scream erupts and you must close the refridgerator in order for him to open it by himself. After juice is poured, the cup must remain on the counter and not handed to Aiden. If you try to hand it to him, another blood-curdling scream bursts forth, and, “I DO IT!!” is heard three miles away.
The only thing he doesn’t particularly want to do by himself is get dressed. More specifically, he has no desire to put his underwear on by himself. I’ll vouch for him: underwear is a little tricky, especially if you get one leg in the wrong hole and the entire process must be restarted. Of course, the fact that, during the underwear-removal process, the underwear is flung across the living room doesn’t help, because then, the underwear must be found before it’s put back on.
Minor distractions also keep Aiden from putting his underwear back on. The television, Lucy, a spot on the wall, these all can contribute to the delay of redressing.
Aiden has little patience. He’s learning, but still does not understand the concept of, “In a minute.” When he wants something, he wants it now. You can say, “In a minute,” or, “Just a second,” but he will only ask you again three seconds later.
What Aiden lacks in patience, he makes up for in character. We think he’s German, having been switched at birth. Linguistically, we know that children grow up learning the accents they hear, but Aiden’s German accent is uncanny. Last night, he kept asking for, “Mein French fries!”
During the last week and a half, the Oompa Loompa song has been stuck in Aiden’s head. He can be heard across the house singing, “Oopa, doopa, doopy, doo! I puzzle YOU!” Then he’ll ask if you, “‘member dat, chockit paptrey?”
Every day is an adventure and I never know what’s going to come out of Aiden’s mouth. What I can count on, though, is his determination to jump off of every piece of furniture in the house, his love of cars, and his obstinate disregard for the wearing of underpants.
