I decided that today would be a good day to wash the sheets. I’d say change, but I like the sheets we have on the bed; I usually just wash them and put them back on. While I was removing all the sheets, pillowcases, etc, Aiden decided to lift up the egg-crate foam we had on top of the mattress. To my horror, there was mold on the underside & growing from the stitching on the mattress itself.

My mother said to spray with some bleach water and then vacuum with the Rainbow, but all my research today tells me to just get rid of it. How the mold got there, I don’t know. We’ve only had this mattress for about 3 years. Maybe less, I don’t remember. Either way, how did it get there?

I’m definitely not sleeping on it tonight if we can’t get a new mattress. So that means co-sleeping is out of the question. I didn’t even put Simon down for a quick nap in the cradle, so he got to take his first nap in the crib.

To further today’s bad luck, I thought briefly about washing Aiden’s oatmeal battle scar, but decided tonight’s bath would do. Then he peed all over himself in the kitchen right after lunch. So Aiden got a bath and I got to mop the kitchen like I’ve been meaning to do for about four months.

With the mattress situation, naptime for me was out of the question and Corey is agonizing through “quiet time” on the couch while I sit here and think of something useful to write. Perhaps I’ll just advise everyone to check out their mattress every now and then. Give it a good vacuuming too just to keep the dust mite population at bay. They eat your dead skin cells and then poop everywhere–that’s what you are allergic to. And you can’t help shedding skin cells.

Or hey! Get a hypoallergenic organic waterproof zippered mattress encasing. I’m certainly looking into them now.

Just dropping by, saw your blog link on mothering.com. Mold…is it possible you’ve leaked milk while sleeping? A friend of ours had the egg carton thingy and they had the mold thing going on too. I’d definetly suggest getting a new mattress and egg thingy and maybe putting an absorbent towel under the sheet under your side of the bed. Just an idea, best wishes for better luck tomorrow!
