Living with Gestational Diabetes

Today marks my first official day of my Adventures in Gestational Diabetes.  So far, I’m not a fan of all the finger pricking, but hey, it’s gotta be done.  I learned a lot in my “class” yesterday about what I can and cannot eat.  Not only will I be saying adieu to delicious, full-fat ice cream, I must also kiss ketchup goodbye.  Well, I can have a tablespoon of it. I dare say that is not nearly enough ketchup for me.  At least I can’t have French fries either.  I’m just so thrilled.
There are several good internet resources for gestational diabetes, though I haven’t researched them all yet.  One site my midwife recommended is the gestational diabetes page on plus-size-pregnancy.org (“It’s not just for big ladies”, she says).
There’s also a support thread on Mothering.com and a thread for diet/meal ideas.

Do you have any sites to recommend? Please feel free to link to them in your comments.

I know exactly where you are coming from. I was diagnosed with GD at 18 weeks and just delivered at 33 weeks. I posted about some food items here http://wondertwinadventures.blogspot.com/2009/01/my-low-carb-favorites.html

It was not as bad as I thought it would be and I was able to control with diet and monitoring. I just had to find foods that worked for me. I love ketchup too and was glad to have found the low sugar ketchup.

    Good luck with it.

I can completely sympathize. I had it with all 3 of my kids. It is no fun. But at least you only have a few weeks of it. If you have any questions about it you have my email let me know. I’m full of info.

Good luck. My whole family, with the exception of me, has diabetes. I’m just waiting for the last shoe to drop. You’re so close to term, so hopefully you won’t have to worry with it too long.
