I'm here to tell you that it's very hard, and unless you are the Anonymous 4 and successful enough to pay someone to arrange tour dates and CD recordings etc. you still have to do it yourself. My group Elysium (4 women singing mostly medieval music), almost got that far, when we got together to record a CD "Auvergne Chants" for Decca Records. Unfortunately, this was in 2000 when Decca was having difficulties and so was the whole classical record industry. They decided they couldn't invest more in an obscure project like ours, but I digress. The sort of work that you want to do is so rewarding, I love it and I totally understand why you would want to do it. It's largely up to you though. If you know any other singers in your area who are of like mind, get together with them, work on a program, organize a few concerts, make a CD, give it to CD-Baby, etc. It won't pay the bills, but you'll be doing your dream-job. Granted, this sort of thing is much easier to accomplish in Europe where the distances and the public appreciation of classical music is not such and issue.
