An open letter to Hasbro

Posted by: Lizzie

Dear Hasbro,

Thank you for making Play-Doh, a delightful children’s toy.  I grew up with Play-Doh, happily making pizzas and hamburgers with the Fun Food Factory.  Now that I’m a mother, I love watching my children express their creativity by making snakes and pancakes out of your wonderful product.

The one thing that bothers me most about your product, though, is that you claim it is “Non-Toxic.”  I assume by “non-toxic” you really mean “not poison.”  If that’s the case, could you please change the label to reflect that?

The reason I ask is because my 2-year-old got hold of my 5-year-old’s 1 oz. mini-tub of Play-Doh and ate half of it.  This isn’t the first time he got into something he shouldn’t have, but it’s the second time he ate Play-Doh.  It’s also the second time that eating Play-Doh gave him the worst diarrhea he’s ever had in his short little life.

The mess alone is toxic.  It smells, is hard to clean up, and it disturbs me that the pieces of Play-Doh I have had to wash off of his burning, chafing legs still retained their color and consistency.  And the smell: it doesn’t go away.  I have to wash his clothes at least two times and my hands an unknown number of times before I don’t catch a lingering whiff of the wrath Play-Doh wraught upon my poor child’s digestive system.

I understand that you cannot release the ingredients list for Play-Doh and there is no MSDS sheet.  I just have a hard time understanding how a mixture of flour, salt, and water does THAT to my baby.

Thanks again for making Play-Doh.  I’m sorry to say that I won’t be purchasing any more for my children after these past two weeks unless you start including sample packs of laundry detergent and carpet cleaner.

Sincerely,

Grossed out in Georgia
