I didn’t stay up really late like I wanted to, but I did finish The Mermaid Chair. A couple people have asked me to let them know how I liked it. It was eh, for me. Usually, if I don’t like a book, I’ll just put it down. What kept me reading was that I wanted to know what happened to the father. Of course, that mystery wasn’t going to be revealed until the end, so I had to plow through a lot of mid-life crisis drivel and wallowing to get there. I really think that if Kidd had spent more time focusing on some other aspects of the story, I would have been more interested in it altogether. (Bear with me: I’m not a good reviewer)

SPOILER WARNING!

I wanted her to go back to her husband and I was glad she did. I just think that her spending a year sleeping with a monk and swimming in the marshes was really selfish. Yeah, yeah, she needed to “find herself,” etc. There was just a lot of building up of the monk character for them not to end up together, you know? I would have been more interested in her relationship with her actual husband or maybe her mother’s relationships with her husband and friends.

END SPOILER

For the next couple hours, I’ll be in church, but I’m planning to read on the way there and back. I’ll check in when we get home from lunch and shopping!

Thanks, Dewey, for a great time!
