Small Talk Six: So Long Summer!

Today’s topic is “6 things you’ll miss (or won’t miss) about summer.” You can answer this with a list of 6 words, 6 phrases, 6 sentences, 6 paragraphs, 6 photos, 6 videos, etc . .

It’s been a long, hard summer and I wish that I had enjoyed it more than I did.  With a new baby in the house, schedules were very erratic and it was difficult to find peaceful moments.  Here are the things I’m going to miss:

  1. Swimming — We didn’t get to do a whole lot of it this summer because one of us had to stay inside with Timothy while the other swam with the older boys.  It was nice, though, being able to enjoy the sunshine and the cannonballs.
  2. Bullfrogs — You read that right.  The sounds of summer include all of the frogs that mate in our pond.  You should hear the deafening chorus around here!  The bullfrogs are the best, though.  They always make me remember that for about two years, I had convinced a friend of mine that the bullfrog calls were really cows doing it in the pastures across the road.  That’s how loud they are.
  3. Strawberries — Oh, how I’m going to miss having strawberries in season.
  4. Peaches — See above.
  5. Timothy’s newborn days — Not that they are going to come back again next year, but still, Timothy’s going to be mobile soon and will no longer be a snuggly little newborn.  I’m going to miss it.  A lot.
  6. Sprinklers and Slip ‘n Slides — One of Aiden’s birthday presents this year was a slip ‘n slide that the boys just went nuts over.  There’s nothing like watching your children bust their booties on the ground, getting covered in mud and grass.

The Mommy Confessions: I feel guilty

The Mommy Confessions

I haven’t done a Mommy Confession in a while, but this week made me realize I need to get something off my chest:

I feel guilty for being sick.

There. I said it.  Why do I, as a mother, feel so guilty when I can’t do what I’m here for?  Sure, I like the peace and quiet that comes with healing.  And it’s great not having to wipe anyone’s butt, clean cheese out of the carpet, or solve major crises between children.  There’s just this part of me that misses being able to snuggle, bounce, and pace the floor with Timothy.  I want to bend down to kiss boo-boos and buckle belts.  Mostly, I don’t want to see my husband overwhelmed like I usually am.

For these guilty feelings, I’m going to blame modern medicine.  If this had been a few decades ago, I for sure would still be in the hospital with nurses tending to my every need.  I’d have flowers by my bed and visitors bringing candies for me to nibble.  But Timothy would not be with me, so I also have to thank modern medicine for allowing me to come home so soon.  I just hate that I can only provide him with my milk and occasional cuddles right now.

Leave it to a mommy to feel guilty about getting her appendix out.  Hopefully, I can heal quickly and get back to doing what I do best…whatever that is.

Relax?  In a house full of boys?  AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Ok, whew.  That’s hilarious.

I’m going to make this a “would like to do” list because there is no way in hell I can do any of these things right now.

1. Yoga retreat!  Maybe one day when I’m not nursing a child and I have a couple grand to drop, I’ll go on a fancy yoga retreat somewhere tropical.  I could spend the day sitting in mud baths and mineral springs, doing yoga, and eating delicious organic foods.  Oh my word.

2. Get a massage.  It’s indulgent, expensive, and only makes you feel good while you are lying there on the table.  But that time is well worth it.

3.  Sleep in.  Every day.

4. I’d also like to not hear a screaming child all day.  Just one day?  Please?

5. I would like to sing Renaissance music with a small chamber choir three times a week.  You have no idea how relaxing that is for me.

6. Finally, I would like to reiterate number four because my three-year-old is currently throwing a tantrum on the couch next to me.  He is majorly upset because he does not have any more clean BLUE PANTS.  Good Lord.
