Zhu Zhu Pets: Review & Giveaway [ended]

Posted by: Lizzie

So the other day I was trying to take a Darvocet-induced nap when I kept hearing this insane giggling coming from the kitchen.  My first thought was that Jamie was having a tickle-fest with Simon because I have never heard him laugh that hard and for that long unless something was seriously hilarious.  I decided to forgo the nap and see what on earth could be the cause of all the insanity.  Turns out, the Fedex truck had arrived with a shipment full of Zhu Zhu Pets from MomSelect!!!

I love hamsters.  They are adorable and funny, but right now we absolutely cannot bother with having another animal in our house.  So I signed up to get a Zhu Zhu pet to try out because I thought they were cute, goofy, and might be hysterical to have because they are so weird.  You know what?  I was right!

Zhu Zhu Pets are the most ridiculously fun hamsters money can buy and the best part is that they won’t poop on the floor, pee on your hand, bite you, or die.  Well, you need to change the batteries every once in a while (save the planet and get rechargeable ones!), but at least that’s pretty much the only maintenance they need.  While I’d love to eventually let my children take responsibility for a small animal, having an infant and a three-year-old would make it kind of hard for me to supervise and make sure it gets fed, watered, and cleaned.  I know I would be the one to have to do it sometimes, too, so I definitely don’t want that extra chore.

Ok, so what exactly is a Zhu Zhu Pet?  It’s a robotic hamster. It makes cute noises and travels around its little habitat all by itself.  You can get all kinds of add-ons like a skateboard, slide, and exercise wheel.  Our favorite extra is the little car it can drive around.  I’m pretty sure that’s what Simon was cracking up about when we first got ours.  It makes car noises when it’s in the car zooming all over the place.  And when it bumps into something, it’ll back up and go the other way.

The only thing about the Zhu Zhu Pet habitats that we didn’t like was that they were kind of hard to put together for kids.  The plastic is rather flimsy and the sections of tunnels come apart really easily, so you have to be careful not to step on them or push down on the pieces too hard.  Take a look at the pictures below to see what all you can get for your Zhu Zhu Pets:

Win it!

One of my readers gets to win a Zhu Zhu Pet hamster and a slide!  To enter, leave a comment telling me what your childhood pet was.  Or, if you never had a pet as a child, tell me what your “dream pet” was.  Did you beg your parents for a pony or a kitten every year like I did?

  1. Steph Says:

My childhood pet was a Siberian Husky named Sukie. She was my best friend growing up and lived to be over 16 years.

  2. Mary Ann Says:

did somebody say robotic hamster? i NEED one. my long love affair with pets began when my parents bought me a kitten at age six. her name was doughnut b/c she was gray with a tan circle on her forehead which looked just like a doughnut. unfortunately, i broke out with hives shortly after her arrival and the doctor said i was allergic, so doughnut went to live with one of my dad’s coworkers (for the record, this man’s last name was Boobin, a name i am happy not to have). to ease my grief, i was given a pair of browm hamsters, tom and jerry. my mom said i cried harder when jerry died than i did when my grandmother died. um, i don’t recall. but tom lived on until he had a prolapsed rectum. that was very exciting for a first grader to tell her teacher. prolapsed rectum. yep, i said it. we took him for surgery but it didn’t work and he died too. this was followed by a string of hamsters for the next 8 years or so. toni was yellow and white and had some babies (she only ate one or two). we would have as many as four cages lined up along the fireplace hearth. these escape artist rodents were constantly figuring out how to get out of their cages. we watched as their tiny bodies crawled up the water bottle and lifted up a brick (a really really heavy brick, people!)to get to freedom. there were some sad tales – kate ate her sister allie, oreo drowned in a bucket of water. but also some happy ones – humphrey was found alive in a bag of tomato potting soil two weeks after his disappearance. chip lived to be almost four! sometimes, if we found a hamster that was cool to the touch but not quite dead, my mom would get a medicine dropper and the bottle of brandy and put a drop in his/her mouth. the nose would start wiggling and miraculously, the hamster was renewed! this happened more than once so i am a firm believer. as if all the hamsters’ drama wasn’t enough, during this time we also had rabbits, a turtle named slick, a dog, and many, many fish. it was a great way to grow up, but lizzie, you are right – the mom usually ends up doing most of the work. that’s why a zhu zhu pet sounds perfect (i don’t live with my mom anymore so who would change the cedar chips?).

  3. Bertie Says:

My childhood pet was an enormous siberian husky/ german shepard mix. I always wanted a hamster, but my mom didn’t want any rodents in the house. :( It’s probably for the best I was a kind of rough little kid and probably would have accidentally squashed my poor hamster. Anyhow, I bet my daughter would love those electronic hamsters. If I don’t win one, I’ll have to keep it in mind for her Christmas list. :)

  4. Nikki Says:

as you know we had lots of pets growing up, my fav was the rat,and the turtles, and the Ginnie pigs

  5. Mary Says:

I have pet allergies so I couldn’t have a pet growing up. Well, we had birds…not much fun since you can’t pet them. I wanted a bunny.

  12. Kerrie Mayans Says:

We would love to have one of these at our house. With a baby and a three year old around I can’t have any thing else to take care of and I don’t trust the 7 and 10 year old enough to take care of an actual animal.

When I was a kid I had an outside cat, but I lived in the middle of nowhere on a dirt road and he was fairly safe. We live in the ‘burbs and there is no way a cat could live outside here without getting hit by a car or something and I don’t want one inside.

  13. Chan Says:

I had many pets a child, hamsters, gerbils, and g. pigs. Gerbils (only the black ones) were my favorite! Thanks for the giveaway!

  16. Trish Says:

I bet my daughter would love this, LOL! Um, we had a Cat Sneakers when I was little, but he ran away and we never found him. Then I really wanted a hamster, and my parents even got a case a garage sale, and then my mom found out she was allergic.

She was allergic to all fur, hair, or feathers, so no more fun pets for us! I think we had a few fish on and off. We had a little frog once, but someone accidentally turned up the heater on the tank and ended up cooking him. Oops!

We did have a dog for a few months that my mom couldn’t go near. But she drank some antifreeze under the neighbor’s car and died.

We really didn’t have luck with pets growing up. Now my dh and I don’t want to take care of anything, so we don’t have any pets.

  17. GMom@ A Mom Is A Job Says:

Hmmm…I have always had dogs but one year when I was about 5 or 6, my parents bought be a parakeet. I loooooved that bird! I named it Pretty thinking it was a girl but found out later that she was really a HE. He was blue, black and white. Ya know…Pretty (Hey I never said it was original LOL!). This bird was more like a dog. His wings were always clipped so I took him out of his cage every day when I got home from school, and put him back in when I went to bed. He was awesome!

Well one day, my dad had come home from working the late/graveyard shift and was hungry, but also very tired. He decided to make some pasta but while it was cooking, he fell asleep on the couch. It must have been a long time because the water boiled down and the pasta burned to a crisp filling the entire house with smoke. Everyone finally woke up (thank God there was no fire) and we all ran out of the house b/c the smoke was so bad. We were all treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation but thankfully, nothing worse happened. Except to Pretty. My dad tried to replace him with 2 more birds (guilt? anyone?) but no…they weren’t even close. I was devastated! That bird was truly something special.

I ended up giving away the two new ones after a while and I’ve never had another parakeet since! Not because of what happened to mine but now that I am an adult…the chirping all day long would drive me friggin CRAZY! Not to mention they are pigs. LOL! I’m all about the low maintenance pets so the Zhu Zhu would be perfect for my kids ;)

When I was a kid we lived on a small farm and thanks to my dad we had every kind of animal you could think of, from horses to ostriches, peacocks, even a pet deer. Llama, hedehogs, cats, dogs, bunnies, we even had a pet fox, skunk, and racoon when I was really young. We did however, have to work hard as kids to keep the pets, if we wanted them. I wish my dad were still here today (tears!) because he would have some strange assortment of animals that my kids could visit, if he were here.

I had a mut named Yin. He barked non-stop but I loved him. One day my parents said that he was going to live on a farm and I believed every word of it. It wasn’t until I was in my 20’s that I learned what “going to live on a farm” meant. :-(
